Room in the Inn - MemphisRoom in the Inn - Memphis is a nonprofit organization working to house and provide resources for unsheltered populations in Memphis, Tennessee. Their congregational shelter program offers nightly shelter during the winter through their partnerships with congregations across the city. On their main campus downtown, they have a Family Inn which offers shelter for families with children who are in MIFA's rapid rehousing program. They also have a Recuperative Care Center for individuals who have been discharged from hospitals and are still medically fragile. Guest advocates work with the guests to get them connected to resources they might need such as health insurance, childcare, jobs, and more.
This organization is close to home for us here at SSS! A member of our founding team, Taylor, has been lucky enough to volunteer and intern at RITI - Memphis during the Spring and Fall/Winter of 2022. We are happy that we have been able to collaborate with and donate to an organization doing such great work! Learn more about what they do and/or donate directly at the links below! |

New York Coalition for the HomelessHomeless individuals are at increased risk of exposure to the coronavirus due to the inability to social distance and inadequate cleaning standards and resources in shelters and public spaces in addition to underlying health conditions that many homeless individuals suffer from. New York’s Coalition for the Homeless is a well-established and trusted 501c3 non-profit organization that has been working to deal with the effects of homelessness and find a solution for over 35 years. They have a multitude of programs ranging from delivering food around the city and assisting in eviction prevention and crisis aid to providing secure housing, community, job training and more to homeless men, women with children, and those suffering from HIV/AIDS. They also have a long history of advocacy and policy litigation, and the numbers and information they provide on homelessness in NYC are trusted by government officials and a wide array of news outlets.
The Coalition has kept many of its programs active during this time in addition to signing and writing detailed policy recommendations, holding virtual memorials, and submitting testimonies to the state legislature detailing how the virus and state responses to it have had a disproportionately negative impact on low-income, people of color. They are urging for policy change, and we chose this organization because we would like to help ensure that they can continue advocating and keep their many programs operating during this time as they are life-saving and life-changing for a great number of homeless individuals. No New Jails NYCNo New Jails NYC is an organization that is actively working to oppose the New York mayor’s plan of constructing new prisons in NYC as a condition for closing Rikers Island. Instead, they are advocating for the billions of dollars to be spent on community programs to help protect and better minority, immigrant, and low-income communities that are so heavily affected by mass incarceration while still closing Rikers. They have developed a plan for abolition in NYC with their ultimate goal being to solve issues of homelessness, transform mental health care, and assist the youth with job opportunities, better classes and school resources, etc. They are partnered with a variety of organizations focused on helping immigrants, victims of domestic and sexual violence, LGBT+ youth, and many more. They have received support from countless educators, social workers, health workers, legal workers and others. We would like to contribute to their cause to support their need for supplies and everyday organization as we also share their vision of a future free from the prison industrial complex where our country’s communities receive the funding, assistance and care that they deserve.

Orenda Tribe's Navajo Nation COVID-19 FundThe Orenda Tribe’s COVID-19 Fund is a fundraiser started by The Orenda Tribe, a company owned by a Navajo woman who had the goal of establishing sustainable fashion with roots in her indigenous culture. The Orenda Tribe has established a COVID-19 Fund that allows for donations to be sent to those most in need in New Mexico who are part of the Navajo Nation, a large Native American Reserve with a population of over 173,000. All donations are being used to purchase and deliver PPE, food and firewood to members of Navajo Nation. As of May 18th Navajo Nation became #1 in the USA for COVID-19 positive per capita. The large population as stated by the organization website has only 13 ICU beds, 28 ventilators and at least 30% of the population have no running water, and no electricity. It is critical that donations be sent and that there is increased awareness about how COVID-19 is affecting indigenous populations and Navajo Nation. Native American populations are one of the most marginalized minorities in the USA and it is important to understand the impact COVID-19 has had on these minorities. We firmly believe it is important to support and donate for towards this cause to not only assist in helping these populations in their fight against COVID-19, but to also help the further the future of these populations.

Send Chinatown LoveSend Chinatown Love prides themselves in "a Chinatown that boasts unbeatable food by small mom-and-pops built on grit, hard work, and the immigrants behind the restaurants". It was started by New Yorkers, both native and those who adopted NYC as home, who, in the midst of the Pandemic, saw their favorite restaurants rapidly disappearing, and knew they had to step in to help save Chinatown. They started this organization back in March 2020, when they "noticed how quickly small businesses were closing due to racism and xenophobia, weeks before the mandated closure". Additionally, many Chinatown business were unable to get government loans because due to application requirements that are "inequitable to immigrant-run microbusinesses". Many of these restaurants are also cash-only and rely on foot traffic, without sophisticated online systems developed adaptable for the pandemic, thus Send Chinatown Love was born. It is an "easy-to-adopt solution to create revenue streams and found creative ways to build a relationship with each and every one of our merchants in order to onboard them to our platform".
All of their profits are donated directly to various restaurants in Chinatown that need support, and they support the communities of Chinatown through numerous programs and initiatives like Gift a Meal and their most recent project Light Up Chinatown. All profits from our "Thank You Takeout Bag" sticker, which was made in collaboration with artist Alina Sloan, will be donated to Send Chinatown Love! Little Rock Freedom FundThe Little Rock Freedom Fund started in response to the Black Lives Matter movements happening in Arkansas. The fund works to "support activists, organizers, and protestors in Arkansas who are working to educate, organize, and activate the people".
All profits go towards helping individuals in Arkansas that need monetary support in their fight against racism. Since we all went to high school at Central High School in Little Rock, Arkansas, we wanted to show support for the inspiring individuals fighting for justice in our home state. Funds received are "used for bail support, education trainings, community supports and mutual aid". The fund makes sure that individuals/organizations that raise awareness to racial and social injustices and combat racism in Arkansas and America are able to be supported. They also provide protestor support, providing a contact form to fill out ASAP upon arrest, and the request will be "triaged by the Arkansas Peace & Justice Memorial Movement (APJMM) office". Finally, they also provide bail support for those jailed to alleviate the high monetary cost associated with being jailed and preventing protestors from being stuck in jail if they are unable to pay bail. You can read more about the issues with prisons and bails in our Abolition and Defunding the Police section under global events. All profits from our "All BLM" sticker, which was made in collaboration with local LR artist Adaja Cooper, will be donated to LR Freedom Fund! Lebanese Red CrossOn August 4th, 2020 warehouses storing ammonium nitrate exploded on a port of Beirut in Lebanon. The blast led to over 190 deaths, 6,000 injuries, and extensive damage to the city area around the blast. Lebanese Red Cross, a humanitarian organization based in Lebanon founded in 1946, immediately began aid to help victims of the blast. Since the explosion, they have been able to offer medical aid and health services to those affected by the explosion. Their work, however, is still not done. One of their goals was to "provide at least 10,000 of the most vulnerable families affected by Beirut Port explosion with direct financial assistance for at least 7 months." Therefore, we highly encourage you to still donate to the Lebanese Red Cross if you can.
All profits made from the week of 08/08/2020-08/15/2020 were donated to the Lebanese Red Cross. You can read and research more about their work as well as donate directly here: www.redcross.org.lb/ |
