In Dec 2023 ALONE, at least TWO more individuals died in ICE detention centers. This is still happening as we speak. Children are being separated, detained, traumatized, families are still being separated, to this DAY!
We chose monarch butterflies because they have become a strong symbol for advocates of biological diversity and human rights at the U.S./Mexico border.
Monarch butterflies also symbolize a connection between the living and the dead, with some believing that they represent the souls of ancestors returning to visit them for Día de Los Muertos, and follow a migration pattern where their final overwintering sites in the mountain forests of Michoacán and the State of Mexico. Just as they endure harsh winters clustered together, emerging victorious in the vibrant spring, as a community we will never forget, never forgive, and never stop fighting for those who had their human rights and their life stripped away by ICE. We have nothing to lose but our chains. ⛓️
